The other day I was playing outside with the kids and had to apply sunscreen on them (this summer I haven't had to do that too often with all the cloudy days!). My boys know the drill by now, and even the little one is very patient as I apply to the cream to all his exposed areas (I still try to cover up most of his skin with a long sleeved shirt and a hat). As I watched him licking the sunscreen off his arms, I once again realized the importance of WHAT it is you're putting on their skin! Sunscreen can be particularly laden with chemicals, so it's important to find one with minimally invasive ingredients. You can now find them in the health food section of your local grocery store most of the time, and health food stores certainly carry a good selection.
Naturally occurring mineral sun blockers include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which create a barrier to the suns rays.
Chemicals such as PABA absorb UV rays, but have proven too harsh and most manufacturers have stopped using it.
It's still best to avoid excessive use of sunscreens, and avoiding the sun during peak hours and covering up are the best options, but if you must use it, choose one that is mineral based, hypo-allergenic, paraben-free and natural!
For after-sun skin care, dry and irritated skin can be treated with Olive Baby Skin-saver or Body Butter! For dry lips apply our Lip-saver.
Enjoy the great outdoors!
